Alexander Morozevich

Born on 18 July 1977 in Moscow, Russia. In his childhood, he trained at the Young Pioneers' Stadium, where he was first coached by Lyudmila Belavenets, then by Vladimir Yurkov.

He was a creative and independent thinker from a young age, often deviating from established opening theory.

Largely self-taught at the highest level, he developed his unique style through deep study and a willingness to experiment.

One of the most original and creative grandmasters of his generation; reached world No. 2 in 2008 with a peak rating of 2788.

Two-time Russian Champion (2003, 2004) and three-time winner of the Biel Grandmaster Tournament.

A World Championship Candidate on multiple occasions, reaching the semifinals in 2005.

Known for his unorthodox opening choices and his preference for complicated, double-edged positions; he is one of the most unpredictable players in the world.

Represented Russia in seven Olympiads and won numerous team and board medals.

Morozevich has said: "I have more confidence in myself than in books or in computer-based preparations. This allows me to find new ideas. However, I lack stability, I can often line up good and bad results. This is my weakness."
