Born in Sofia, Bulgaria, on 19 April 1979. Her father, Andon Stefanov, a designing artist, gave her first chess lessons at the age of four.
At age seven, she won a local women's tournament and became champion of Sofia.
Won the Girls U10 section at the World Youth Chess Festival in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, in 1989.
Made her debut in adult chess at the 1992 Olympiad in Manila at age 13.

Studied in Sofia and developed her chess skills through Bulgaria's strong chess tradition.

10th Women's World Chess Champion (2004–2006), winning the 64-player knockout tournament in Elista, Kalmykia.
Became the 9th woman in history to earn the Grandmaster title in 2002, the same year she won the European Individual Women's Championship in Varna.
Reached the Women's World Championship final again in 2012, losing to Anna Ushenina in a tiebreak.
Won the Bulgarian Women's Championship in 1995 and the European U14 girls' championship in 1992.
In 2024, she served as a brand ambassador for the Tech Mahindra Global Chess League and is the honorary president of the Bulgarian Chess Federation.
