Born on 29 May 2006 in Chennai, India, to an ENT surgeon father and a microbiologist mother.
Learned chess at age seven at Velammal Vidyalaya school in Chennai, after a teacher suggested he take it more seriously.
As a young boy, he spent many nights curled up in the back of the car while his father drove him to weekend chess tournaments.
His childhood coach V. Bhaskar noticed his unusual focus: "Gukesh was a 7-year-old who wouldn't get up from his seat until he finished the work he was assigned. He didn't mind sitting for 3-4 hours playing chess."

At the 2023 WR Masters, when organizers suggested a shared first place, Gukesh refused and insisted on tiebreaks, even though he was the lowest-rated of the three co-leaders. Levon Aronian: "I thought, 'wow, this guy is a special character.' He's so young but doesn't care if somebody is stronger or more experienced than him. He just wants to shoot for the stars."
His first tournament ended in a loss, but he was determined to continue. His father said: "I thought he might not want to play another tournament, but he seemed pretty sure that he wanted to continue."
Inspired by Viswanathan Anand and Magnus Carlsen, he dreamed of playing a World Championship match as a child — a dream he realized 11 years later.
