Magnus Carlsen

Born on 30 November 1990 in Tønsberg, Norway, and raised in Lommedalen, a small town near Oslo.

Learned to play chess from his father when he was five, but was not really interested until age eight.

As a young child, he displayed extraordinary memory: by age two he knew all car brands by heart, and later memorized all Norwegian municipalities with their flags and administrative centres.

His first love was football, not chess; he only returned to chess on his own volition around age seven or eight.

He found chess "just a richer and more complicated game than any other."

Attended a private school in Norway while competing internationally; he admitted that balancing school and chess became increasingly difficult.

Largely self-taught as a chess player; he studied about three hours a day, far less than many top players, and relied on intuition and deep understanding rather than brute-force memorization.

16th World Chess Champion, winning the title in 2013 by defeating Viswanathan Anand in Chennai.

Became a Grandmaster at age 13 years, 4 months, the third-youngest in history at the time.

Held the World Championship title from 2013 to 2023, defending it successfully four times: against Anand (2014), Sergey Karjakin (2016), Fabiano Caruana (2018), and Ian Nepomniachtchi (2021).

Declined to defend his title in 2023, citing lack of motivation. He remains the world No. 1 and is widely considered the greatest player of all time.

Achieved the highest rating in history: 2882 in May 2014. He has held the No. 1 FIDE rating continuously since July 2011.

Also a dominant force in faster time controls; won multiple World Rapid and Blitz Championships.

Known as "The Mozart of Chess" in his early years. At age 13, he drew against Garry Kasparov and beat Anatoly Karpov in the same tournament.

Carlsen's style evolved from aggressive attacking play as a prodigy to a universal, positionally suffocating style that grinds opponents down in long endgames.

He is known for his incredible stamina and ability to play long games without fatigue, often winning in the sixth or seventh hour.

In 2023, he chose not to defend his World Championship title, saying: "I am not motivated to play another match. I simply feel that I don't have a lot to gain."
