Michael Adams

Born on 17 November 1971 in Truro, Cornwall, England.

His chess talent manifested at an early age; he won several junior events in England before venturing onto the international stage with a silver medal at the World Under-16 Championship in 1987.

His father, Bill Adams, co-authored two books with him about his early chess career: Development of a Grandmaster (1991) and Chess in the Fast Lane (1996).

Largely self-taught as a chess player, he developed his skills through the strong British junior chess system and intense competition.

One of the strongest players in the world for over two decades, ranked as high as No. 4; a World Championship Candidate on multiple occasions.

Became a Grandmaster in 1989 at age 17, and won the British Championship.

A key member of the English national team, winning multiple Olympiad and European Team Championship medals.

Known for his solid, positional style and his exceptional endgame technique; one of the most difficult players in the world to beat.

Still active in his 50s, he remains one of the top players in the world and continues to compete at the highest level.

Adams is known for his modesty and his dry sense of humor. He once said: "As usual in Ostend, I had prepared for this game with a few beers followed by a Jean-Claude van Damme film."

He has said: "But I don't regret that I didn't win the World title. I achieved so much more than I expected."

He is universally respected for his sportsmanship and his gentlemanly conduct at the board.
