Peter Leko

Born on 8 September 1979 in Subotica, Yugoslavia (now Serbia), into an ethnic Hungarian family. He moved to Szeged, Hungary, when he was one year old.

Learned to play chess from his father during summer holidays a few weeks before turning seven. His father is a complete amateur chess player.

Took part in tournaments from the age of nine; his first coach Tibor Károlyi began working with him in 1989.

Became the world's youngest grandmaster in 1994 at age 14 years, 4 months, breaking a long-standing record.

Largely self-taught at the highest level, he developed his understanding through intense study and competition.

One of the strongest players in the world in the 2000s, ranked as high as No. 4; a World Championship Challenger in 2004.

Played a World Championship match against Vladimir Kramnik in 2004, drawing 7–7 but losing the title on a tiebreak.

Won the 1992 European U-14 Championship and shared first place at the World U-14 Championship.

Known for his solid, positional style and his exceptional drawing ability; one of the most difficult players in the world to beat.

After retiring from competitive play, became one of the most respected chess commentators and a mentor to top players like Vincent Keymer.

Leko's father taught him chess on a beach during summer holidays, a humble beginning for a future world championship challenger.

He is known for his humility and his thoughtful approach to the game, often opening up about his thought process during commentary.
