Peter Svidler

Born on 17 June 1976 in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg), Russia.

Learned to play chess when he was six years old.

Showed prodigious talent early, and by 1991, he split 1st–3rd place at the World U16 Championship.

By 1994, he was both a World U18 Champion and a Grandmaster.

Attended school in St. Petersburg and developed his chess skills in the city's renowned chess infrastructure.

He was a product of the Soviet chess system, which nurtured his talent from a young age.

Eight-time Russian Chess Champion (1994, 1995, 1997, 2003, 2008, 2011, 2013, 2017) — no one else has achieved a hat-trick of Russian titles in modern times.

Represented the Russian Olympiad team ten times, helping his team win gold medals in his first five appearances.

Played three Candidates Tournaments and won the World Cup in 2011.
