Shakhriyar Mamedyarov

Born on 12 April 1985 in Sumqayit, Azerbaijan.

His father, Hamid Mamedyarov, a master of sports in boxing and a chess enthusiast, introduced him to the game in the summer of 1993. He began training at a local chess school under coach Valida Bairamova.

Chess ran deep in the family; his sisters, Zeinab and Turkan Mamedyarova, both became Woman Grandmasters. His father also taught him boxing, fostering a fighting spirit that later defined his chess style.

Attended school in Sumqayit, graduating in 23rd place in his class before committing fully to professional chess.

Largely self-taught at the highest level, he developed his game through intense study of Soviet chess literature and fierce competition.

One of the most dynamic and accomplished grandmasters of his generation; reached world No. 2 in February 2018 with a peak rating of 2820.

The only player in history to win the World Junior Championship twice (2003 and 2005).

Won the World Rapid Championship in 2013 and multiple super-tournaments, including Aeroflot Open, Dortmund, and Biel.

A World Championship Candidate on multiple occasions, reaching the semifinals in 2014.

Known for his uncompromising, tactically rich play and his aggressive style; he is one of the most feared attackers in the world.

Mamedyarov grew up in a chess family; his sisters both became Woman Grandmasters, and he often played against them as a child.

He has said: "I probably know chess pieces better than people" — a reflection of his deep focus on the game.

His fighting spirit was forged by his father's boxing training, which he credits for his never-say-die attitude at the board.
