Yuri Averbakh

Born on 8 February 1922 in Kaluga, Russian SFSR, Soviet Union.

Learned chess at age seven and showed early talent, but his childhood was overshadowed by the political turmoil of the Soviet era.

His father was arrested during the Great Purge, and Yuri's early life was marked by hardship and uncertainty.

Studied at the Moscow Institute of Fine Chemical Technology, graduating as an engineer.

He later earned a degree in history from Moscow State University, reflecting his broad intellectual interests.

One of the strongest Soviet grandmasters of the 1950s and 1960s, and a World Championship Candidate in 1953.

Won the Soviet Championship in 1954 and was a member of the Soviet Olympiad team.

Known for his solid, positional style and his exceptional endgame technique.

Became one of the most influential chess writers and theoreticians of the 20th century; his four-volume Comprehensive Chess Endings (with others) is a standard reference.

Served as the editor of Shakhmaty v SSSR and was a leading figure in the Soviet chess establishment.

Lived to be 100 years old, dying in 2022, and remained intellectually active until his final years.

Averbakh's longevity was remarkable; he witnessed the entire arc of Soviet and post-Soviet chess.
